This video series is expanding upon the work I performed as Miss Montana to include two partnerships: one with NASA and the other with NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As the next Miss America, these partnerships provide us ample opportunity to connect with young women and girls in science venues – performing meet and greets, as well as a video series touring each facility and explaining the various career options Miss America helps prepare women for.

Goal:

Is to show places careers in science can take woman and how Miss America prepares women for those careers.

Purpose:

Is to share new perspectives for how the work women in science perform, how their work impacts the lives of everyday citizens, and the relevant skills from Miss America.

It is also to recognize the remarkable science happening in each state through the National Science Foundation.

Goal:

Is to stay connected with state titleholders throughout my year and create another entertaining avenue to increase the publics incorporation of science into everyday decision making.

Outdoor Acivites
Outdoor Activites

Description:
According to the Pew Research Center, only 2 in 10 people have an interest in science-related hobbies, yet millions of Americans enjoy the outdoors every year. This demonstrates a clear misunderstanding of the general public's perception of science hobbies. As Miss America, this series will be combined with the “Expedition of Queens” where me with my fellow sisters will host outdoor science hobbies at national parks  where people will be able to come and participate with us. Located to the right are sample videos.

Goal:
Is to bring people together for an event to connect science with outdoor activities. The goal with the videos are to expand the reach to a larger audience.

Purpose:
1. Only 1 in 4 people follow a science page (Pew Research Facility). By creating short entertaining videos with the “Expedition of Queens”, this will increase the people following a science page.
2. Is to get people thinking about the activities they do involving science and being fun.

Pulic Spaces
Public Spaces

Description:
As the next Miss America, my plan is to host this event at planned appearances to add fun unique activity to the events.  This activity provides people the opportunity to participate in a fun challenge called, “Are you Science Savvy?”. The challenge includes answering a series of science questions related to current societal issues. With permission from each participant, their answers will be recorded and edited together to create a video published on social media. The winners who answer all questions correctly will win a prize to be determined at a later date.

Goal:
Is to raise awareness for the Miss America Organization by meeting America in public spaces and unique and meaningful interactions.

Purpose:
Is to expand recruitment efforts to more public spaces while also advocating for my social impact initiative, Savvy Science, and increasing the number of people who incorporate science in their everyday decision making.

Description:

I currently work at the Black Butte Fire Lookout in Eureka, Montana where one of my primary responsibilities is Public Relations for the Forest Service. This is my third year working for the Forest Service and with the title of Miss Montana, I want to use my connections to create a mutually beneficial recruitment video.

There is currently a shortage of wildland firefighters, yet in our state there is an increase in frequency and intensity of wildfires. As Miss Montana, I would use my existing partnership with the Forest Service to promote the Miss America Organization by showcasing me, in the various roles people can serve on fire crews. To the right is an initial list of the footage I would obtain for the video.

Distribution:

The video would be distributed to over 400 Town Pump gas stations across our state.

Partnerships:

United States Forest Service & Town Pump

Goal:

Is to increase recruitment for the organization by distributing footage of Miss Montana at easily accessible locations across the state that showcases her doing relatable, honorable, and exciting activities.

Information Literacy Presentation

Description:

I currently give presentations for Savvy Science to improve information literacy throughout the state of Montana. Information literacy is being able to understand information and surrounding context, motives, and alternative perspectives presented to someone. As the next Miss America, my advocacy for utilizing information to make well informed decisions and create well informed opinions, is adaptable to all audiences for any speaking engagement. I also plan to utilize my “Six Tools to Verify Information in Under 10 seconds” speech to target blue collar workers in America. Every state has blue collar workers who build roads, are firefighters, work on construction sites, farm, etc. Information literacy is beneficial to everyone and can specifically be use to gain access to blue collar workers to speak about the benefits of adapting fact finding strategies to their lives. As Miss Montana I’ve given these 10-minute speeches starting with my academic and professional credentials and then at the end revealed I’m Miss Montana, concisely debunk common misconceptions, and briefly explained the organization is a great way to pay for their daughters or nieces college education. Blue collar families have the most to gain from competing. Because rural America is so incredibly importance to me, as Miss America I am prepared to match every urban speaking engagement, I give with a rural speaking engagement to help market the organization. My social impact initiative provides the opportunity to de-stigmatize and target predominately male careers to expand the relevancy of our organization nationally.

Goal:
1.    Is to make sure every student I interact with feels touched and connected to science and the Miss America organization, and has a tangible item to leave with - whether that's an individual polaroid picture, a digital photo, or a signed autograph card in K-12 schools.
2.    My second goal is to match every urban speaking engagement with a rural speaking engagement.
3.    My third goal is to expand the relevancy focus of the organization to men by speaking to blue collar workers.

Purpose:
Is to target the relevance to previously non-priority audiences, such blue collar workers, to increase both recruitment for the organization, and information literacy in America.
Partnerships:
Chris Ferris – a children's book author who simplifies scientific concepts.

Science Comunication Workshop
Science Communication Workshop

Description:

I have developed a course called, “Science Communication for Students Studying Science” that fills a need in post-secondary education for helping students relay scientific information to the public. The goal of the course is to help connect science to society by directly teaching students science communication skills. I have transformed my 10–12-week course into a 10-minute workshop and presented it at over half of the universities (16) in Montana. As the next Miss America, my plan is to use the national partnership with the American Heart Association to provide a service to hospital employees on how to discuss heart disease to friends, families, and patients. Additionally, my workshop provides marketing opportunities for the Miss America organization to expand our recruitment efforts to university classrooms by providing a lacking service to university students. Lastly, this workshop works in conjunction with my NASA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and National Science Foundation (NSF) partnerships to increase recruitment – as the workshop is a doorway into these facilities where social media content can be created and used virtually as an online marketing tool for recruitment.

Goal:
Is to increase both recruitment for the organization and science communication by utilizing the workshop in conjunction with
1.    the national partnership with the American Heart Association in hospitals
2.    universities to provide a missing service to it’s students
3.    my partnerships (NASA, NOAA, and the NSF) to perform meet and greets at research facilities and create social media content.

Purpose:
Is to expand the Miss America recruitment outreach in-person and online by using my workshop as a doorway into hospitals, university classrooms, and research facilities where people are taught skills in science communication such as (emotional recognition, empathic responding, and the imago dialogue).
